If you are looking for an established, tree filled, walking-friendly neighborhood, Old Lakeway may be for you.
Old Lakeway (also referred to as Lakeway Proper) is the footprint of the original Lakeway community on the west side of FM 620. The two main streets are Lakeway Boulevard and Lakeway Drive, and all of the other streets stem and branch from these. It is almost entirely residential, except for a cluster of low key retail/office/restaurant buildings adjacent to the City Hall complex and a great locally owned market/deli.
Along FM 620 at the entrance to Lakeway is the main shopping area, with all of the conveniences you'd expect- major grocery store, major drugstores, restaurants, coffee shops, doctor and dentist offices, professional services, a few fast food stops but no big box retail per the city code. Driving about 10 minutes south you will find a Target, Home Depot, Lowes, Best Buy and many more at the Shops at the Galleria and the Hill Couintry Galleria.
There is a great variety of housing and lifestyle available in Old Lakeway; from the original 1970´s vacation bungalows to state-of-the-art modern waterfront palaces. There are condos and townhouses, but just a few. The "garden home" is another option- a detached home of around 1900-2400 sq.ft. on a smaller lot, where yard maintenance is usually provided by the Homeowners Association.
Lake front and lake view property is always in demand. Golf course lots are also popular, as are greenbelt locations and lots with views of the rolling hills beyond.
The first Lakeway homes were built in the early 1960's, mostly as weekend lake homes. Many original purchasers aquired multiple adjacent lots. Over the years these lots gradually become available for building. As a result, brand new homes, 20 year old homes and original lake get-aways all happily co-exist in Old Lakeway. Building codes require 65% stone, brick or masonry exteriors and garages that do not face the street, but also require that no two homes look exactly alike. The result is a pleasing blend of styles and looks, and even a bit of beloved eccentricity. Ask me about the "Mushroom House!!"
With the exception of a few areas, Old Lakeway is free of homeowner associations dues. However- homeowners are subject to the City of Lakeway's well thought out restrictions and codes which help to maintain a beautiful environment and healthy property values.
